No matter what era you grew up in, the Disney Princesses have no doubt influenced your childhood. However, for a long time, the image they returned was relatively simple, highlighting only female characters with white skin.
To act in favor of inclusion and offer a fairer representation of the society that is also forged by animated films, Disney has imagined dolls in the effigy of its most emblematic princesses with various skin colors.
In recent years, the American animation giant has redoubled its efforts by offering new mixed-race characters like Tiana in The Princess and the Frog, Moana in Moana, or even choosing actress Halle Bailey to play Ariel in the live-action The Little Mermaid.
More recently, Disney has approached the photography duo, Creative Soul Photography, formed by Régis and Kahran Bethencourt. The artistic couple had just produced a series of photographs a few months earlier, highlighting little black girls proudly wearing dresses inspired by the most famous princesses of the franchise.
This personal and committed project inspired Disney, who offered them an unexpected collaboration. They collaborated to give several princesses, including Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel, a more diverse appearance while honoring African culture.
The dolls display natural hair, while the iconic outfits have been somewhat revisited with ethnic patterns, fabrics, and jewelry. The two photographers thus hope to transmit values that are dear to them and touch little black girls to show them that they can also be magnificent and inspiring princesses.
The Disney Princess x Creative Soul doll collection is set to be available beginning February 3 on Disney’s online store as well as Disney Store and theme park stores. They will be offered at the price of 55 euros.
